The new release of The Glenrothes' Platinum Single Cask Collection has been launched in Italy: 34 Years Old Single Cask.

The distillery

glenrothes

Glenrothes is a historic Scottish Speyside distillery, founded in Rothes in 1878. Together with The Macallan and Highland Park, is part of the Edrington Group and with its 10 copper stills it is able to produce up to 5.6 million liters of new make spirit per year, a fine malted barley distillate that will become the whiskey of tomorrow. Only a small part of what the distillery produces will end up in the bottle as Scotch Single Malt, because The Glenrothes, thanks to its pronounced personality, has always been a fundamental element of some top selling Blended Whiskeys such as Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse. It is therefore only the best barrels, selected one by one, that give the whiskey that will bear the glorious name of The Glenrothes.

The core range: Soleo Series

In 2018 Glenrothes became part of the Edrington Group, which revolutionized its range of stable bottlings. Today the “Soleo” series features a 12 year old, an 18 year old, the rare 25 year old and the declared ageless whiskey Maker's Cut, from first fill barrels only. All single malts have a natural 100% color.

Soleo is a Spanish word that indicates the practice of drying bunches of grapes in the sun which will form the basis for the production of some Sherry wines. And in fact the common thread of the Soleo series is the aging in barrels that have contained Sherry. Traditional Solera casks are now rare, so Scottish distilleries almost always make new casks in Spain, often made of American, French or European oak. The Edrington Group stands out because it has created a supply chain that goes from tree to barrel ready to be sent to Scotland, a system that guarantees quality and continuity.

Cooperage, the artisanal care of wood

To best manage this precious heritage of barrels, Glenrothes proudly remains one of the few distilleries to still have an active internal cooperation with coopers which process, dismantle and reassemble approximately 6,000 thousand barrels per year. This type of activity is now outsourced by almost all distilleries, which in this way optimize resources. The maintenance of the cooperage in the town of Rothes therefore adds charm and quality to the work of a more than historic distillery like Glenrothes.

Platinum Single Cask Collection

This limited series of Scotch Single Malt Whiskey represents the pinnacle of the range created by the whiskey makers at The Glenrothes. The Platinum series includes only single barrels selected one by one and bottled at the original cask strength, only once the whiskey has rested for at least thirty years inside the warehouses of the Rothes distillery.

Barrel number 9031, filled on 27 September 1987, jealously guarded the Glenrothes spirit for 34 long years and was chosen thanks to the incredible personality it developed. The whiskey was bottled on 26 July 2022 at an alcohol content of 53.6% and is 100% natural colour. It is a former Hogshead Bourbon, the use of which represents in a certain sense a deviation from the classic style of the distillery, but it is precisely the purpose of this series to highlight a unique organoleptic profile, a gesture comparable to a work of art, a continuous dialogue between wood, whiskey and time from which the plot of a speech never heard arises. This single cask, from which only 218 bottles were made, is marketed exclusively for the European market.

Finish: ripe fruit and cotton candy alternate with majestic hints of old wood

Curiosity: the cemetery

In 2018 and 2019, two celebratory Halloween bottlings were made. An inspiration that came from the twilight touch given by a Celtic cemetery right next to the distillery. The gravestones are completely blackened due to a curious fact, connected to the life of the distillery. The Baudoinia Compniacensis fungus is very fond of ethanol and from the cellars of Glenrothes it then found fertile ground to infest the nearby cemetery.
