Cosmopolitan Day, the most drunk iconic pink drink in the world

The drink with a thousand shades of pink brings together all mixology enthusiasts on May 7th to celebrate it. From its controversial history to the characters who made it famous, let's discover together some curiosities about the most feminine cocktail ever.

May is the month of Cosmopolitan

The day chosen to celebrate this iconic cocktail is May 7, therefore we advise you to request it from your trusted bartender. It can be sipped during aperitif time as pre-dinner, but also after dinner. On a late spring evening, like in this period, an excellent cocktail with fruity notes is more than pleasant. One of the main characteristics of the Cosmopolitan is freshness, and if there really was a drink capable of inducing people to drink something they had never drunk before, well this would be it.

The history of the cocktail

The Cosmopolitan It has a very controversial history in the world of mixing, its origins date back to the 1930s, when the original recipe was not based on vodka but on gin. Then inexplicably all traces of it were lost until the 1980s, when several American bartenders began to dispute the paternity of the cocktail.

Among the most famous we remember Toby Cecchini, who developed the Cosmopolitan al The Odeon in New York City in 1987; And Cheryl Cook, bartender and owner of The Strand. His drink was later cited by the famous Cosmopolitan magazine, from which the cocktail then took its name.

The most accredited hypothesis attributes precisely to Cheryl Cook the invention of the drink. We could say that the legend tells of a fortuitous encounter, had by the bartender, with theAbsolut Citron. A lemon flavored vodka that inspired her to the point of inventing a new cocktail, the Cosmopolitan. This is how Cheryl defined the birth of the new cocktail "The Martini was coming back into fashion, with its classic glass. The women didn't seem to like the cocktail very much, but rather liked to be seen with the martini glass in their hand”. Thus was born the idea of creating an elegant cocktail, like a Martini glass, but for women.

And it is no coincidence that a decade later the cocktail, invented by a woman for women, has become a timeless classic thanks to two women. The first is the singer Madonna, who after drinking the Cosmopolitan from the great Dale Degroff to the Rainbow Room in New York City, he couldn't do without it anymore. And then we have the icon of glamour Carrie Bradshaw, main character of the series “Sex and the City”, who does nothing but sip Cosmopolitan at every good social occasion.

The international Pink Cocktail and its recipe

The Cosmopolitan or Cosmos it is famous for being the most drunk American drink in the 90s. It is an international vodka-based alcoholic cocktail, officially recognized by the International Bartenders Association (IBA). It is part of the dei family Cape Codder, drinks based on vodka and cranberry juice, are generally served in a glass. Elegant and refined, with a good balance between sweetness and acidity, no matter what anyone says, it is a cocktail with a fairly high alcohol content, which, dampened by the cranberry juice, gives the drink a soft and pleasant aroma with every sip.

We leave you the recipe below to make you want to run and taste it. We are classicists, in some recipes you will find blueberry, but we are for the tradition that sees cranberry as the creator of its iconic pink.
