In the fascinating world of whiskies, where every drop tells a story, Laphroaig celebrates its founders with an unpublished series, “Strong Characters“, a journey that explores the legacy of the visionaries who forged the brand’s identity.

Founded in 1815 on the Scottish island of Islay, the distillery Laphroaig has built a timeless reputation over time, thanks to a tradition that combines artisanal savoir-faire and innovation. To honor its roots and the boldness of its founders, Laphroaig launches the first chapter of this new commemorative series with a Limited Edition, the Laphroaig 33 YO. Dedicated to Donald Johnston, co-founder of the brand, this single malt aged for over three decades captures the most authentic essence of Islay, between peaty notes and marine reminiscences.

The Laphroaig 33 YO stands out for its uncompromising flavour, the result of an infusion of over three decades spent in American oak barrels and ex-sherry vats, which give it a unique depth. This spirit reflects the determination of Donald and his brother Alexander, who founded the brand in 1815. Thanks to bold choices, the two brothers succeeded where others failed, earning a reputation for producing a whisky like no other. On the nose, the bouquet opens with sweet notes of caramel, heather honey and the unmistakable freshness of the sea breeze. On the palate, the delicacy of the sherry blends with the strong character of the Laphroaig, adding nuances of fruit and spices that accompany the long and smoky finish, characterized by salty touches and herbaceous tones. Making this edition even more special, there is the artistic contribution of Bill Bragg, famous British illustrator, who visited Islay to immerse yourself in the history and soul of the brand. His illustrations, in black and white, evoke the harsh and fascinating landscape of the island, managing to capture the very essence of the whisky and its protagonists.

“There is a growing desire among whisky drinkers to know not just the flavours, but also the stories behind them. The ‘Strong Characters’ series offers the opportunity to explore the pioneers who have made Laphroaig what it is today” said Teddy Joseph, Global Brand Ambassador for Laphroaig.

Next to the 33 YO, Laphroaig also introduces a 30 YO made using the traditional production techniques that make Laphroaig unique, This amber-coloured expression gains new complexity from lengthy maturation in first-fill and refill American oak casks, as well as hogsheads and European (ex-sherry) oak casks. Tropical fruit and floral notes, acquired over 30 years of maturation, balance the distinctive smoky notes – and whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks or with a few drops of purified water, it offers a truly unforgettable tasting experience. Notes of orange and lemon zest emerge on the nose immediately, alongside custard and toffee, which open up to reveal notes of bergamot, baked goods and fresh thyme, accompanied by a touch of white pepper on the palate. Finally, a finish of fiery peat smoke and smoky campfire notes complete this complex yet balanced single malt.
