Tiki: The Culture and the Birth of Mixology
The term Tiki is often translated as “image of something” and refers to the large stone sculptures and artifacts, often of volcanic origin, which portrayed anthropomorphic forms. According to Polynesian legends, each tiki encloses a spirit and these were often used to mark the boundaries of sacred or significant places
The culture Tiki It arrived in American culture in the 1930s, making it highly commercial and a source of inspiration for a exotic mix: it was in fact Donn Beach, at the time Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt, the father Tiki culture which, together with Victor Bergeron, made it known in the United States and throughout the world with the Don the Beachcomber, the first Polynesian-themed bar-restaurant to open in Hollywood.
From here began Don's adventure in Tiki mixing, considered among the most difficult of all time, made of technique, research And balance, but which certainly creates fascination towards Polynesian exoticism and mysticism. This is also thanks to the use of the iconic Tiki Mug, which were intended to entertain and amaze the clientele of exotic venues, as well as create a true escape from everyday reality. But this is only the beginning of the fascinating story of Tiki culture and its resurgence in modern mixology.
